VISION
Our motto translates our vision
A DISCOURSE ON THE VISION OF HOLY CROSS INTERNATIONAL COLLEGE, AS PRESENTED BY JOHN ENONGENE.
Our vision is our mission. Therefore, the starting point in any discourse on our vision is a re-statement of our mission which is:
"Providing Academic Excellence And Moral Rectitude For a Balanced Personality and Sustainable Leadership"
Academic excellence, moral rectitude, balanced personality and sustainable leadership are the key words which summarizes our vision.
Academic Excellence
"Man by nature wants to know" says Plato; this is surely why education is a Right and not a Privilege. A great philosopher once said that, ignorance is the night of the mind, a night without moon or star, but in my opinion, lack of knowledge is darker than the night. Academic excellence is at the center of our vision, because we believe that education makes a people easy to lead, but difficult to drive, easy to govern, but impossible to enslave.
In today's fast-moving world, we have realized the need to constantly change and adapt to new challenges, to set new dimension and directions, to build a new sense of dynamism. At HCIC, we are reinventing 21st Century teaching methods to achieve academic excellence. The past thirty (30) Years of research in cognitive psychology has demonstrated that learning and memory depend upon organizing information. The more organized the better remembered. Our students are drilled to get "inside the author's head" to determine the author's style of presentation; as such knowledge can be used as the basis for a variety of studying and writing strategies.
We limit our class capacities (20-25 per class) so that everyone is on the front bench. This establishes a close relationship between the teacher and each student thus facilitating both teaching and learning. We have put at the disposal of our students, a library of close to 2.000 books just for a start, so as to encourage a reading culture and broaden their scope of knowledge; an information technology laboratory with Internet connection is also available. Our curriculum covers both for Cameroon G.C.E. and American and British Exams. We prepare our students to enter American, Canadian and British Universities, and our affiliation to these Universities almost guarantees their place.
Moral rectitude
Morality is not really the doctrine of how to make ourselves happy, but of how we are to be worthy of happiness. Morality is a very vital aspect of our human existence. Even the lower creatures have no respect for the impure man. A philosopher once said that children are angels whose wings grow shorter as their legs grow longer. At HCIC, we are working hard to see that the wings and legs of these little angels will grow contemporaneously. A professor of the highest grade without a sense of morality is a misfit. We train your children to stand in the midst of right and wrong yet chose right, to conquer pride and ignorance, to have respect for self and others and to love their neighbor as themselves. We train them to live in dignity, unity, integrity, and prosperity, to substitute courage for caution, to feel the pains of others and to understand that it is better to be penniless than honor less, and that an honest man is the noblest work of God.
Balanced personality
A balance personality is a combination of a variety of virtues, knowledge, wisdom and the ability to learn, like Plato said, if you know a thing, hold that you know it, if you know not a thing, allow that you know it not. This is balanced personality.
Every 21st Century child should besides being very intelligent in his/her bookwork, be a good dancer, a good spotter, a singer, a good orator, great writer, and be computer literate. Your child should know how to eat at table, how to speak in public, and how to do minor household jobs like replacing a bulb, painting a portrait, cooking or giving First Aid.
At HCIC, we are raising a generation with a new sense of social responsibility, community service, critical thinking and informed judgment. A generation that will star in the eyes of fear without staggering, who can call right, right, and wrong, wrong, no matter who does it. A generation who shall embody a great sense of patriotism, who understand how wrong it is to throw dirt in the street, and that in as much as they have rights, they also have duties, an OBAMA generation, the one that can respond at all times with that timeless creed that sums up the spirit of the people and gives them the urge to keep going "YES WE CAN". We are raising a generation that will soar into the sky like a Mandelan Meteor, threatening to touch the stars, a generation that will change the Nation and the world.
At HCIC, our vision is to raise your children in a manner that society will be proud of. We will train them to dream big and to understand that it is not calamity to die with dreams unfulfilled, but it is rather calamity not to dream, because the dreams of today are the realities of tomorrow. Yes we can. We are here because one man had a dream and worked hard to make it come true, that's why we are here. One man understood that his dream could impart lives, change a Nation and a world. "Non Scholae Sed vitae discimus" not for school but for life do we learn. We live for today, we learn for tomorrow.
Leadership
Leadership is service, it is teaching by example. Ledru-Rollin, a leader of the 1848 French Revolution said " I have to follow them, I am their leader", this complements the words of Henry Miller when he says that, the real leader has no need to lead, he is content to point the way, it is also a corollary of the word of Nelson Mandela, that a true leader must lead like a shepherd, from behind.
The greatest challenge of our time is the environment; the second is leadership, the world hungers for good leadership and our Nation hungers even more than the rest of the world. We need to raise a new generation of leaders with the fear of God, lover for country and a sense of honor, a generation that understands that a leader is a dealer in hope.
To some generations, much is given, of others much is expected, but it seems to me that our generation has a rendezvous with destiny. Your children, when they leave here, shall be leaders of the changed generation and penetrate the system like virus of positive change. The road ahead is long, the climb is steep, we know but I have never been more hopeful we will get there. While we breathe we hope and with hope we can touch the stars.
This is our vision, it is yours too, it is that of the Nation and the world too. It will take your efforts too, we must work under the theory of synergy, that the whole is greater than the sum of its part and that we rise and fall as one people. The time is now; not tomorrow; not some future more convenient time; it is today that our greatest seed can be sown; it is today that our greatest work can be done. Trust me when I tell you we shall get there.
Thank You
GOD BLESS YOU.
